The cAWElumn: Food

Feeling like you can never find a good place to eat in Berkeley? In this week’s cAWElumn, a series where we gather AWE-dvice on common college student topics and concerns, we asked AWE members where they like to go grab a quick bite, where they dine for a nice sit-down meal, and where they get their freshest groceries. Read their responses below to learn more about how to diversify your palate here at Berkeley! Also, be sure to check out last week’s cAWElumn on housing if you haven’t already. ❤️

Q: Say you have twenty minutes between lectures and your tummy is rumbling — where do you go to get some quick bites or drinks?

Hetal: I absolutely love Momo Masala on north side! Their momos are great

Andrea: +1 to Momo Masala! The ones who give you your dishes are also incredibly warm and kind ❤️

Dana: When I lived on north downtown Shattuck, I used to get sweetgreen a lot! A healthy and yummy meal, though not so much of a quick bite haha :)

Dana’s sweetgreen order!

Janice: Sheng Kee for something ready to eat and cheap! I like the milk buns, egg tarts, and pineapple buns! Also Seoul Hotdog for something quick and sweet if I’m on northside

Q: Your family is visiting and you want to treat them to somewhere nice — where do you take them for a sit-down meal?

Izzy: Ooh my mom just came for the weekend and I took her to Taste of the Himalayas! The food was amazing; my personal favorite was the steamed vegetable dumplings and the Chana Masala. This place is especially great since a lot of the options are vegetarian or vegan :)

Afreen: Berkeley Thai House is always a great sit down place

Riya: Thai House!!!!

Andrea: I took my parents to Angeline’s, which is also one of the most and highly reviewed restaurants here! They liked it a lot :3

Renee: Angeline’s!!!

Melanie: Comal!

Maria: Sichuan Style Restaurant

Liyah: Kimchi Garden 😋

Q: You’re trying to be healthier and eat out less — where do you get groceries and what do you cook? Share your proudest creations and/or biggest culinary failures!

Kirthi: Trader Joe’s is my fave — they always have so many yummy snacks! My biggest culinary failure though was one time I tried to make a tofu pasta soup and it was really the grossest thing I’ve ever made (other than the time I tried to make boba from scratch LOL)

Hetal: BERKELEY BOWL!!!

Emily: I shop at Berkeley Bowl and sometimes Safeway if I’m in a time crunch! Hetal can you give a whole spiel about why Berkeley Bowl is the best, but TL;DR it has an amazing variety of produce and bulk section. I usually cook some kind of stew/curry or stir fry
